Serene Sunday: Little known fact about famous prayer

Every day of our lives presents a new opportunity for personal growth. If you firmly keep the faith and believe in yourself, you can stand strong no matter what happens in your life. I know it sounds facile and simplistic, but it’s true! Many of us are familiar with the Serenity Prayer, and if you’ve ever recited it, you know it goes like this:

God grant me the Serenity
to accept the things I cannot change;
Courage to change the things I can;
and Wisdom to know the difference.

But it doesn’t end there, this famous prayer/poem goes on to say:

Living one day at a time;
Enjoying one moment at a time;
Accepting hardships as the pathway to peace;
Taking, as He did, this sinful world
as it is, not as I would have it;
Trusting that He will make all things right
if I surrender to His Will;
That I may be reasonably happy in this life
and supremely happy with Him
Forever in the next.
Amen.

I continue to find comfort in saying this prayer, in its entirety, and thought I would share this little “revelation” as most people only know the first few lines. Whether or not you’re in recovery, I believe that if you declare yourself willing to surrender to your Higher Power, that opens the door to God’s grace and eases pain and suffering. Serenity is a divine gift that is yours, if you but have the courage and wisdom to claim it… Blessings on the path!
